Tile Distribution and Letter Frequency
Accurate tile-tracking depends upon knowing the total Letter Distribution of the game and the frequency of each letter, and then reproducing each one in the correct frequency in order to facilitate the ‘accounting’ of each letter as tiles are played, in order to ascertain which tiles remain ‘unseen’—either in still in ‘the bag’ (letters available to draw) or on the opponent’s rack. Pre-printed forms are popular because it eliminates the need to continuously create such a list for each new game. However, anyone can make their own list with paper and pencil once they know the correct number of total tiles and the correct number of times each tile (or letter) appears in the game.
The Scrabble letter frequency list is different for many letters than the Letter frequency list of Words with Friends. For example, there is a total of four 'S's available in a Scrabble game, but five 'S's in a Word with Friends game. There are eight 'O's in Scrabble and but only six 'O's in Words with Friends. Additionally, Scrabble and WWF differ in number for following letters: D, E, H, I, N, T.
In English-language Scrabble, the total number of tiles is 100.
In Words with Friends, the total number of tiles is 104.
